Rohit Quits Tests | Who Will Be India’s Next Test Captain

India captain Rohit Sharma has quit Tests. Who will be India's next captain in white? The answer should have been easy. Because, the vice-captain of the Test team is Jasprit Bumrah.

In Rohit's absence, he led the two Tests against Australia in the last Test series. However, cricket portal ESPNCricinfo says that Shubman Gill, not Bumrah, has a better chance of getting the responsibility of the Indian Test team.

India has to think like this because of Bumrah. Because India's best cricketer Bumrah will definitely not play all the team's Tests. Bumrah will be played selectively to get the best. So if Bumrah is not there, India will have to look for a new captain again. That is why Gill is at the top of the list.

The selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar will announce the team for the England series by the end of this month. India's new World Test Championship cycle will start with that series, and therefore the selectors want to choose the captain keeping a long-term plan in mind. In this regard, 25-year-old Gill is ahead.

ESPNcricinfo reported that Bumrah is the mainstay of India's pace attack in all formats, so there are concerns about his workload, especially since he suffered a back injury in the final Test of the Australia series, which also kept him out of the first few matches of the IPL.

Among those who were in the team for the last Sydney Test, Lokesh Rahul has experience of leading in Tests. He has previously led in three Tests. Before that, Virat Kohli was the long-term captain.

Gill has not yet captained India in Tests or ODIs. However, he has led the team in five T20Is, which was in Zimbabwe in mid-2024. Many of India's first-order players were rested for the series that followed the T20 World Cup. Gill is now the vice-captain in both versions of the white ball.

For months, it was said that Gill was being groomed as a future captain. His performance as captain of Gujarat Titans in the current IPL was also good. In 2024, he replaced Hardik Pandya as the captain. Pandya led them to the 2022 title and the final the following year.

He then returned to Mumbai Indians. Although Gujarat's performance in 2024 was not good, this time they are one of the best teams. They are now at the top of the points table.

Gill made his debut in December 2020, against Australia. He scored 45 and 35* in his debut match. India won that Test under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane. Since then, Gill has been a regular in the Test team. He has scored 1893 runs in 32 Tests, at an average of 35.05. He has 5 centuries and 7 fifties.
