Dhoni smiles says that bowling first is not that bad because that is what they have been doing so far in the tournament. Wants his side to adapt to various conditions, one of which was seen in their last game against Punjab. But is aware that they will get more challenges in each game.

On the team changes, MS says that they have made one change, with Karn Sharma coming in for Piyush Chawla.

Kolkata skipper, Dinesh Karthik feels...

That in the last two games batting first is what they have been doing, so he wants to stick with that. Admits that there has been a great deal of talk about their batting request but does not reveal what are the plans for this game. Informs that they are going in with an unchanged side.

Toss time...

Overall quite cool out there. Dinesh Karthik is the home skipper. Heads is the call from DK and it is a Head. Kolkata will bat first.

Pitch Report

Profound Dasgupta observes that on this deck in this tournament, the batsmen have would in general score off the more full lengths. The ball does move around a smidgen, which is adequate to inconvenience the batsmen. On the off chance that the bowler has pace, he can cause issues via landing the ball on a decent length area, which will make the ball dash around.

The track is the same as the one used for the Mumbai-Rajasthan game, there are cracks as well, but there is a lot of grass to keep the deck together. Looks to be a generally excellent cricketing pitch with the straight boundaries long and the side ones short.

Battle of the Kiwi coaches

Coach of Chennai? Stephen Fleming. Coach of Kolkata? Brendon McCullum.

It was under Flemo that Baz made his international debut. While McCullum has been a part of many a side in the Indian T20 League, Fleming has consistently stuck with Chennai.

In fact, BMac played under Fleming during the 2014 season for Chennai. He and Dwayne Smith framed an incredible combination at the top of the request.

This is the first time that the two Kiwis clash as coaches in the League. The calmness of Fleming vs the aggression of McCullum. Should be enjoyable to watch the tactics from each.

Not far from action!

Throughout the previous multi week, we have probably been hearing just about one animal in the wilderness. The Lion. It roared in the first game but then went calm, till it resurfaced against Punjab.

Kolkata have entered the wilderness today with an aim to attempt to tame the lion. Will they be successful? Chennai vs Kolkata is about to get underway shortly...

Chennai hold a slight edge!

Seeing the last 5 encounters between these different sides, Chennai hold the edge over Kolkata. Chennai have beaten them threefold while Kolkata have gone over the line twice but this is another season and all the previous results will not matter. Chennai however at present have the momentum courtesy their thumping victory over Punjab and might want to expand on it. Kolkata however are not pushovers and the 3-time champions would have to bring their best game. Should be a close contest!

Dre Russ flopping, thus far!

Andre Russell has been a revelation in the past for Kolkata but this year, he has failed to turn up with the bat especially. He has hit some lusty blows but it has not been sufficient and Kolkata have been struggling because of that. Yes, he bowled well in the last game but he has to perform with the bat which is his stronger suit. Kolkata desperately need him to return to his demolishing best sooner than later.

Kolkata need to try harder!

Kolkata don't have a decent record against Chennai. Their bowlers have the worst bowling average against MS Dhoni's men and they would need to address that on the off chance that they want to win against them. Dinesh Karthik's men have not been at their best with the ball this season as well and considering their already helpless record against Chennai in the past, they have their task removed. Their batting too has not done too well against Chennai and they have a helpless record of having one of the lowest strike rates against them. Can they set up an improved performance?

Will the real Sunil Narine please stand up?

What do Kolkata do about Sunil Narine? He has not been the same player as he was in the previous seasons and this experiment seems to have gone past its expiry date. Narine has crossed 10 just once in 4 innings and he needs a major score to restore his batting worth as an opener. He is an integral player to the side but his failures are hurting the team a ton and there is a requirement for a change. Will they consider bringing in Tom Banton to replace him? Probably not, as that will leave them with a bowler short.

DK under performance tension!

Worst seasons in terms of average for Dinesh Karthik in the League -

2020 - 9.3

2015 - 12.8

2012 - 18.3

2010 - 21.4

2014 - 23.2

Kolkata's struggle!

Kolkata had a tough start against Mumbai but two back-to-back wins would have given them certainty. They however were outclassed by Delhi in Sharjah as they struggled with the ball and then were poor with the bat. Just Russell bowled with some intent while others were taken to the cleaners. Dinesh Karthik's men were largely poor with the bat but the transition to send Morgan down the request failed badly. Karthik himself has struggled and questions are being asked about his captaincy. The best way to silence everybody is by winning and performing consistently, something they would be aiming for!

Chennai's acceptable record in Abu Dhabi!

Chennai have played 3 games in Abu Dhabi, twice in 2014 and the opening experience in this version. Their bowling has made a good showing here as they bowled out Delhi for just 84 in the 2014 release and this year, they restricted a strong Mumbai line-up to just around 160. Their bowlers have the best strike rate and average and they would want to continue that performance. Kolkata have played 5 games in Abu Dhabi and have won just twice but their certainty will be high as the last time they played here, they won convincingly and would appear to be identical.

Bowling woes!

Both Kolkata and Chennai have faced bowling issues in this tournament. Jadeja and Chawla for Chennai discovered some structure in the last game but overall, they have been disappointing. They would be pleased however that Shardul Thakur bowled well, especially at the death. For Kolkata, the bowling has been not all that great. Barring Varun Chakravarthy, no one has put their hands up and conveyed. Sunil Narine has not been at his usual best while Pat Cummins, the costliest overseas purchase in the auction, has blown hot and cold. Although youthful Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti have shown promise, Kolkata demand more consistency and control from their pacers.

The Chennai openers repay faith!

The opening stand for Chennai was struggling in the first 4 matches but they turned it around in perhaps the best chase, one must have seen in this League. Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson were exceptional against Punjab, registering an unbeaten 181-run stand. That was the kind of performance that Chennai were looking for to get their campaign back on track. Presently it's all about continuity and consistency.

Dhoni's adoration for Kolkata!

The player that Kolkata will be wary of is MS Dhoni. He loves playing against Shahrukh Khan's men and has the best average against them. Will this be the game where MS Dhoni returns to his old self and showcase what he is made of? But there is a chink in Thala's armor. He may have a terrific record against Kolkata but struggles against Sunil Narine. He just fails to get moving against him and has a miserable strike rate against the West Indian off spinner. Dinesh Karthik may very well hope to save a couple of overs of Narine for MS.

MS vs DK!

Chennai vs Kolkata! Two teams who have dominated 2 matches with Kolkata playing a game less. The Indian T20 League, 2020 has seen a lot of action already and with Chennai and Kolkata playing some exciting encounters in the past, we are sure that another interesting clash in Abu Dhabi is on the cards.
