Welcome!

Another identity. Another captain. There are a great deal of things that are changing heading into the new season of the Indian T20 League. For Punjab, they have changed their identity heading into the fourteenth edition of the competition, whereas, Rajasthan have chosen to find another captain to guide their boat and they go to Sanju Samson, for the same. Starting off the season with a win will be the mantra in the two camps. But, the pressing factor of winning the primary game can improve of the best teams out there and it will be interesting to see how they combat the nerves. With some new faces in both the teams, anticipate a cracking experience. Which team improves of the other? Join us as we bring you the toss and the team news quickly.

Match Day

Final call?

In the Indian T20 league, Rajasthan and Punjab have faced multiple times, with Rajasthan winning 12 of those. In recent experiences, they have won 3 of the last 5 games. Rajasthan would want a repeat of 2020, where they won both their games against Punjab.

Punjab, on the other hand, would hope to repeat their performance from 2019, where they beat Rajasthan on both the occasions. We should expect a cracker of a match!

A trial of Bishnoi's abilities!

Ravi Bishnoi was a big positive in an otherwise poor 2020 season for Punjab. He got 12 wickets at an economy of under 7.5 but battled towards the second half of the tournament. He would have buckled down with coach Anil Kumble and desire to improve in his second season.

Punjab's bowling capability!

Punjab spent big bucks in the auction on the youthful pace of Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith. But their bowling will spin around the experience of Mohammed Shami. The pacer has been out of action for a while, but coach Anil Kumble has revealed that Shami is fit and good to go.

Chris Jordan will also play a big job in the pace department while Jalaj Saxena, Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi will take care of the spin department

Bring it on!

Christopher Henry Gayle is a threat in the Indian T20 league independent of earlier form and age. But if there is someone who realizes how to counter the Gaylestorm, it is Chris Morris. The big man from Jamaica has battled against the pacer, as he has gotten out to him multiple times in seven games. The strike rate also is just over 100.

Time for Malan to demonstrate his value!

Dawid Malan, ranked number 1 in T20Is, has done well in international cricket but in homegrown cricket, he has not been anywhere close to that form. He has battled through various homegrown leagues like the Pakistan Super League and the Big Bash and even his recent returns against India in the T20I arrangement was poor. But he finished the arrangement with a solid fifty and Punjab would want him to continue that way. It will be interesting to see where he will bat, if at all chose, in the star-studded line-up.

KL Rahul - The Unfortunate Hero!

Who better than Punjab co-proprietor Preity Zinta to compare KL Rahul's fortunes in the League to that of a supporting actor in mainstream cinema? How often have we seen motion pictures where the supporting actor shows improvement over the main person but neither does he get what he wants in the film nor does he get sufficient acclamation. KL Rahul is half of that kind. He gets acclamation but not what he wants - consistency in team wins in spite of him leading from the front.

It's difficult to talk about Punjab's batting and not talk about Rahul. His recent form in the T20Is against England was dismal, but a man of his class is never too far away from runs. This is apparent from his performance in the last three seasons.

KL is the highest run scorer in the League since 2018, having amassed 1922 runs at an average of over 50. In addition the captain would be extremely excited to start the team's campaign at the Wankhede Stadium. It is a happy hunting ground for him and he has the highest average at this scene among the current players

A shopping binge for Punjab!

Punjab went on a shopping binge in the auctions for the 2021 Indian T20 League. They spent big bucks on young people like Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith and Shahrukh Khan. They also a few all-rounders in Moises Henriques and Fabien Allen and got the No. 1 T20I batsman, Dawid Malan, at his base cost

Unadkat's battle in the recent past!

If Rajasthan have to progress nicely, then Unadkat has to go to the fore. This is what my colleague Ketan feels. Should be an Unadkat fan.

No, he is not a bad bowler but just that after a great season in 2017, his performance has been declining from that point onward. His number of wickets has gone down, whereas his average and strike rate have risen. Moreover, he has the third-highest economy rate at Wankhede and fifth-highest average against Punjab.

So with most extreme regard to Ketan and Unadkat, one feels it is better if Rajasthan don't pick Unadkat here, or use him smartly, preferably in the center overs.

What's up with Rajasthan's bowling?

Jofra Archer's injury will be a big setback for them and the responsibility presently shifts to Morris to spearhead their bowling line up. He will be upheld by Kartik Tyagi, Jaydev Unadkat and Mustafizur Rahman in the pace department. While Rahul Tewatia, Shreyas Gopal, Mayank Markande and KC Cariappa will take care of the spin department.

How's Pink team's batting looking?

Rajasthan have one of the most solid batting line ups. With any semblance of Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, David Mill operator, Riyan Parag, and so on in their ranks, they have a ton of capability. An area of concern in the past has been their lower center request, but with Morris and Dube joining Tewatia, they can surrender any bowling line a run for their money.

With Steven Smith not there anymore, the onus lies on Jos Buttler to furnish Rajasthan with a good start at the top and anchor the innings. Buttler strikes at over 160 against the pacers during the Powerplay. Against spin however, he is cautious at the start and strikes at just under 130. It would be interesting to see if Punjab bring on Murugan Ashwin or Ravi Bishnoi early on to develop the tension on Buttler and disrupt him.

Costliest purchases in the Indian T20 League (Crore INR)

Chris Morris (Rajasthan) - 16.25 - 2021

Yuvraj Singh (Delhi) - 16 - 2015

Pat Cummins (Kolkata) - 15.5 - 2020

Kyle Jamieson (Bangalore) - 15 - 2021

Ben Stokes (Pune) - 14.50 - 2017

Rajasthan - A team under another leader!

Leading up to the auction for the season, Rajasthan let go of Steven Smith and named Sanju Samson as their captain. They went in the auction and purchased Chris Morris for a whopping 16.25 crores INR and purchased Shivam Dube and Mustafizur Rahman among others. Things were looking all set for the season, but then they endured a big blow after their star player, Jofra Archer, was controlled out of the initial not many games

Time for Game 4!

With six teams having played their first match, it is currently an ideal opportunity for Rajasthan to take on Punjab at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The inaugural champions beat Punjab on the two occasions during the 2020 season, and that included a spine chiller in Sharjah, in which Tewatia stole the game from Punjab's hands. Punjab will be eyeing revenge

Sanju Samson - remember the name!

Samson initially combined with Dube and they raised a 50-run stand, before Dube lost his wicket. Then, came a quickfire stand between captain Samson and adolescent Riyan Parag, as they stitched a 52-run stand, in just 22 balls. The two of them continued attacking the bowlers but Parag didn't hang around for long too. Samson couldn't have cared less, he continued smacking the boundaries and also became the first player to get his century in quite a while debut game as captain in the Indian T20 League. He got Rajasthan so close, and almost scored the six on the last ball to win the game, but sadly for him, it was not meant to be.

Shaky start!

Not the start you need when you are chasing 222 to win. Stokes goes back in the first over and Vohra follows him back soon after. Samson and Jos Buttler came together and added a 45-run stand and were looking good out there but Jhye Richardson foxed Buttler and asked him to take a hike. Even however Rajasthan had Samson out there and good profundity too, at this point, you would think that this is Punjab's game. But no sir no, Samson had something altogether different planned in mind.

What a game!

Goodness. What a game of cricket this has been. Can you even believe that this is just the fourth game of this year's competition? This game went right to the wire and it is the new captain of Rajasthan, who has gone up to the fore and almost took his side home but sadly for him, he required one last stroke to win, which he was unable to find. Nevertheless, a wonderful innings from him and also praise to Arshdeep Singh, who kept his nerve, directly at the finish to see Punjab open their season, with a win.
